“Social media ready and pimped to perfection.” The exact words that Sugar Buns uses to describe their MEGASHAKES… and pretty much sums up what this cafe is all about. A 2 hour trek for me from the city to Hampton Park, Sugar Buns made it well worth it and I could see why the cafe was packed on a weekday The megashakes from Sugar Buns puts freakshakes to shame with their icecream and sugar loaded toppings, not to mention the actual rich and guilt-inducing milkshake itself. It’s almost become a Melbourne cafe rite – of – passage to order a shake from Sugar Buns…
The good fat: Wow Sugar Buns does not kid about portion sizes. This cafe has got to have one of the biggest portion sizes I’ve ever seen. When the massive steak sandwich my friend ordered came up, with a hefty knife stabbed right through its centre, we knew we were up for a challenge. But Sugar Buns left us defeated – no matter how tasty the crispy sandwich was, it was a struggle to finish but DEFINITELY would recommend for bulking season my friends 😉
Despite being classed as “Something Light” – the salt and pepper calamari was not exactly a light meal in itself – not that I’m complaining. There was a perfect balance of creamy feta, acidic lemon and the guilty savoury pleasure of chipotle mayo on the side for dipping. I loved the roasted peppers on the side, and the sheer portion size of the tender twirls of calamari was just to die for!
The bad fat: Not much! The theatrics of the Ice Tea Explosion with the raspberry mango tea was really cool, but taste wise it seemed more like a raspberry soda to me.
