The Counter

If a cosy, neighbourhood cafe had a definition, it would be The Counter in Hawthorn. Directly across the road from Auburn Station, The Counter is a lovely quick stop for a light bit of breakfast and coffee, or a delicious brekkie catch up in their outdoor courtyard in the back with plenty of greenery dotted around you. The owner, Georgia, is passionate about her cafe and so welcoming, wishing for nothing but to share her small piece of suburban Melbourne brunch with customers – and that is no wonder The Counter brings is teeming with locals.

Salmon Fritters

The good fat: It has been so long since having fritters – and The Counter presents us with a tantalising selection of various flavours, including salmon, or Mexican. The generous smooth spread of avo with feta, with a few slices of salmon on top, decked with a light beetroot relish and acidic dill caper salsa made it a tasty combo.

Green Breakfast Bowl

I just love my healthy breakfast salads as it leaves me filling satisfied with all the green fibre, and I don’t feel too guilty about indulging on a few sugary desserts after brunch. The salad bowl at the Counter was an ultimate combo of richness from feta and avo, with a slight swish of pesto for an earthy vibe, and the crispy broccolini and broccoli. Not to mention the runny poached eggs for such protein! The Counter served me everything I could ask for in a breakfast salad.

Fresh dessert platter

If there is one thing that catches my eye, it’s the dessert cabinet. The freshly baked cakes glistening behind the glass cabinet at The Counter Cafe were begging me to eat them. We asked for a small selection and were presented with a delicious platter. The morsels of the raspberry slice, lemon tart, berry tart, and orange cake were like small bites of a dessert lover’s dream. A delicious array of desserts – nothing that was too sweet!

The bad fat: Nothing! The iced taro drink wasn’t available so it just means I have to come back and try again!
