Yoi Indonesian Fusion

Yoi Indonesian Fusion is a new Asian restaurant that has opened up in the up-and-coming Asian foodie hub of Fulton Lane on the northern end of the Melbourne CBD. Yoi, translating to “yes” in Indonesian, is a family – run restaurant, featuring traditional Indonesian recipes with a modern fusion twist – overall resulting in a restaurant with simple, yet delicious food easily under $10 or $15 and affordable for all.

Gyutan don $15.8 (left), Salted Egg Indomie $8.9 (bottom), Lucy’s Oxtail $12.9 (top)

The good fat: Whenever a restaurant is still half full at the odd time of 3 pm, you know you’re in a for a treat. Yoi creates a clever twist on a classic uni student staple, Indomie, by incorporating a mellow, salted egg sauce, tender pieces of chicken, and a beautifully golden sunny side egg.

The gyutan don featured generous helpings of marinated ox tongue (we asked for the non-spicy option) – definitely something I ventured out of my comfort zone for, and the ox tongue had a very interesting, chewy texture that reminded me of incredibly lean meat. Lucy’s oxtail soup is reminiscent of any Asian household, oxtail pieces that simply fall off the bone, cooked in a light Indonesian broth – the ideal winter warmer.

Sweet Martabak – $11.5

The Sweet Martabak is somewhat of a signature dessert at Yoi – an absolute must get! The airy, soft and moist pancake with sweet undertones and satisfying greasiness… my personal favourite filling combo now is nutella + peanuts (cheese is another popular alternative) because the warmth of gooey nutella and the crunch of peanuts in condensed milk is an absolute cravings satisfier.

The bad fat: It would’ve been great to have a stronger marinade on the gyutan don because without the chilli, the meat itself was on the bland side. But honestly, when food is so cheap and delicious what more can you ask for?! I would go back to Yoi Indonesian Fusion anyday.
