MEATLOVERS – this one’s for you! Bluestone American BBQ Coburg is one of those places you HAVE to just go once in a while, forgetting about all the calories and healthy dieting goals, but just let you and your stomach relax, and truly INDULGE. The epitome of all the greatest American eats, Bluestone American BBQ does it all – specialising in BBQ meats, but not forsaking burgers, beer, cheesecake and pies! It makes for the perfect group hangout dinner, with 3 different set options to choose from, we easily settled on the “Pick 3” – the biggest option that allowed us to try a little bit of everything!
The good fat: We started our journey across America with the crispy pork belly – needless to say, the satisfying crunch of your teeth sinking into the skin, followed by the juicy flesh and fat pulling away was heaven to the meatlover inside of me. Bluestone BBQ seems to have found the magic recipe for cooking everything to tender succulence without compromising the slight crunch of these grilled meats, nor the moisture within.
The crispy chicken had one of the lightest crumble coatings I’ve ever tried (aside from Japanese karaage), so it barely left that heavy, greasy aftertaste. Likewise, the twice cooked pork spare ribs peeled away from the bone at the lightest touch, and that classic sticky sweet BBQ sauce generously coated its outer surface, with a light coating of peanut crumble to top it all off.
Another highlight for me was the Cuban-styled pulled pork, with that iconic, subtle smokiness detectable through the strings of meat. To be honest, if I had an unlimited appetite for meat – I could just live in Bluestone BBQ, gorging my way through every rib, pulled meat, burger and pork belly without a care in the world. Luckily, the Pick 3 came with a light, coral leaf salad and tangy creole salad, which offered a refreshing, “healthy” break from all the meats.
Cheesecake. My one true love in the world of desserts. The moment my eyes glimpsed the words,” New York Cheesecake”, on the menu at Bluestone American BBQ, there was nothing else to be seen. Bluestone’s New York cheesecake was a tall, white piece of pure heaven on a plate – my fork glided through with smooth ease, and in the end, each morsel of cake was just the perfect, rich and decadent balance of creamy cheesiness.
The maple pecan pie was a welcome combination of a nutty pecan aroma, with generous crunchy pieces all over the top, and a sweet, but definitely not overpowering maple filling, Naturally, this was all filled within a solid, biscuit base – simple enough, and simply just yum!
The bad fat: (Aside from a guiltily delicious meal full of saturated fats… sorry health!) Stone ground grits was an interesting choice rather than the classic mash potato, which I think would’ve worked really well to soak in the fatty rich oil from the BBQ meats, that restaurants often choose to do, so it could be an avenue for Bluestone American BBQ to explore in the future.
