Apollonia – $17.5

The good fat: Just going to start off by talking about the dessert because I’ve been seeing the Apollonia EVERYWHERE on Instagram and it is absolutely a must-try! In a time where panna cotta and hotcakes are rife across cafes in Melbourne, The Guilty Moose has decided to make things interesting with an Apple Pie Spring Roll, complete with apple and raisin salad, walnut crumble and vanilla icecream.

Some day, brunch cafes should offer an option of extra nut crumble on desserts because that walnut crumble on the Apollonia was so crunchy – and I could probably just snack on it non-stop! Balanced with the light, fresh crispiness of the Granny Smith apples, and the break-apart crunch of the spring roll pastry – what a well-balanced sweet breakfast option.

Falafel Salad – $19.0

The falafel salad is the perfect option for a bright and sunny Spring day – with subtle flavours from the garlic labne, the juicy bits of pomegranate with beetroot and of course, the bite-sized chunks of falafel itself, if you’re feeling a bit of a light and healthy option, The Guilty Moose has you covered with this!

Slingin’ Hash – $19.5

For a bit of contrast, we also tried the “Slingin’ Hash” – what a unique creation! What impressed me the most about this were the flavours from the tarragon mayo and almost caramelised quality of the sauerkraut with potato. The small chunks of potato melted in your mouth whilst the corned beef strips added that lovely salty kick.

The bad fat: Not a bad comment, but it would be interesting to see Guilty Moose try give a potato rosti-like coating to the pieces of potato hash – with crumble coating the potato pieces for an added, fried crunch rather than a sautée-styled approach could give the dish even more interesting textures!
