Black forest hot chocolate

Ciel Cafe is a spacious, warehouse-styled cafe newly opened in the busy suburb of South Melbourne. It immediately strikes me as a brightly lit and friendly spot that I would happily sip on their delicious, Winter hot drinks for a few hours, tapping on my laptop for work, breaking it up with a pastry here and there.

Grain Salad – $17.0

The good fat: Ciel Cafe has the amazing idea of creating a Winter hot chocolate – something I wonder why more Melbourne cafes haven’t JUMPED on board with. The black forest hot chocolate is just that extra bit special – a light hint of fruity, cherry-like syrup, cinnamon spices and the mellow warmth of hot chocolate itself is all that was needed to transport me to the Christmas night markets of Europe.

For lunch, I enjoyed a healthy, grain salad with a nutritious and seamless blend of quinoa, chickpeas, feta and rocket, the aromatic crunch of almonds, with juicy bites of cherry tomatoes, atop a creamy, beetroot purée and lemon vinaigrette.

Brioche French Toast – $16.0

The texture of Ciel Cafe’s brioche french toast was heavenly, the rich central softness that disappeared into nothing was the perfection of layers we reached after crunching through the crispy outside.

The bad fat: The breakfast roti was a slight letdown – with the vegetarian option having no maple streaked bacon, it was simply a normal wrap filled with scrambled egg and rocket, and nowhere enough of the chilli sauce on the side. Whilst the elements of the french toast were clever, especially the thought of a coffee caramel sauce, we could barely get any hint of it!

FAT-O-METER: 3.5/5
