Another highlight of my Melbourne Northside brunches of 2019 comes from The Espresso Room in Northcote! Part of the suite of cafes from No.19, Pinkie and St Rose, just to name a few – The Espresso has a really rustic and old-school trendy interior that has persisted through time, complete with a deli section at the back and a cool windmill strung up to the ceiling. Another hot tip is definitely make sure you order a coffee here, I tried the soy magic (double ristretto) from the Espresso Room and it was such a gorgeous, silky coffee!
The good fat: Can’t ever go wrong with a classic Italian seafood linguine marinara! There were generous helpings of the seafood marinara mix, with mussels, calamari, prawns and even scallops (my fav!!) – all cooked to tender perfection. The broth-like sauce underneath was filled with all the aroma from the seafood with a hint of zesty lemon.
The seafood paella blended the warm tones of capsicums with the subtle saffron perfectly, allowing a base palette to accentuate the rice – the real winner of this dish and a rare plate where seafood takes a back seat. Not to mention, the Spanish rice was cooked to a light, yet distinct texture so that each grain could still be distinguished.
We were lucky enough to come on a day that they had a special French toast with berries, sweet mascarpone, bacon and dehydrated banana as their daily special. No regrets here! Crispy golden edges, fluffy creamy interior, and maple bacon adding the slightest touch of savoury to a classic sweet breakfast dish. A prime example of two ingredients coming together in synergy to make a dish taste even more special!
The bad fat: The saddest moment of the day was when we had to admit defeat at the golden fluffy pieces of French toast left on our plate because our stomachs gave up on us :(It would’ve been lovely to have that extra special addition of presenting the seafood paella on a mini paella pan like they do in Spain. Although the French toast tasted amazing the way it was, we were looking forward to experiencing the dehydrated banana but it didn’t feel like it existed on the plate, likewise the mascarpone was a little light and we would’ve loved an extra flavour combo like coffee!
