Unabara Lobster and Oyster Bar

Unabara Lobster and Oyster Bar is a Japanese restaurant with 2 outlets in Melbourne Central and Emporium – with a specialty in Japanese seafood ramen (featuring lobsters… no surprises there!) We dined at the Melbourne Central store, and with an incredible seafood broth, a large casual dining area, this Japanese restaurant makes a splurge-worthy option for a casual get together, especially for lovers of Japanese food and ramen (even more perfect in Melbourne winter).

Lobster and Seafood Sapporo Miso Ramen – $32.80

The good fat: You can’t come to Unabara lobster bar and not order lobster right? We decided to go all out and try both the Seafood Lobster ramen, along with the surf and turf. In terms of flavours, I definitely appreciate the ramen more because the broth was amazing! I don’t usually finish the ramen broth because it is food coma-inducing, but this one I just couldn’t stop myself.

The Unabara ramen soup was golden, rich, and jam packed with flavours of the ocean after simmering for 16 hours and infused with soybean paste – scallop, prawn, crab and LOBSTER, and the best thing – not at all too salty, meaning that there’s no concerns about that nasty MSG lurking around. The chashu slice was a delicious addition.

Surf’n’Turf – $39.9

The best thing about this Japanese version of surf’n’turf was actually the sauce accompanying the Angus tenderloin and the lobster. The steak, whilst they didn’t ask for the cooking style, was cooked medium rare (luckily for us) and the accompanying yuzu/soy-sauce like dip was so delicious, and a nice contrast to the classic, heavier red wine or mushroom sauces for steak. The potato chips were also, interestingly really crisp and one of a kind!

The bad fat: Part of the lobster we had didn’t feel as fresh, with slightly stringy flesh rather than that compact and meaty texture, and it was also a bit overcooked, losing some of that tenderness. This is a bit of a letdown considering Unabara specialises in lobster.
