Chicken or the Egg Cafe

CHICKEN OR THE EGG CAFE, CANTERBURY: My first official Melbourne brunch of 2019 is a venture down the renowned Maling Road, for Chicken of the Egg Cafe on the busy Australia Day public holiday. Blue skies, gentle breeze, and spacious white timber tables – it was a perfect day to sit outside in the morning, enjoying a wholesome Melbourne cafe to start 2019!

Turmeric Crab Omelette (Blue swimmer crab meat, shoots, fresh chilli, mint, parsley, fried shallots, hoisin drizzle, peanut & chilli sambal) – $23.5

The good fat: Chicken or the Egg features an extensive menu with both breakfast and lunch options, struggling to pick between 3 seafood savouries – we thought why not try all three! And what a great idea that was. The turmeric crab omelette unexpectedly had such a dense volume of blue swimmer crab that was definitely the highlight of the dish. The hoisin drizzle and spiciness of the fresh chilli in the sambal gave a great diversity of flavours.

Calamari Salad (Pearl couscous, cherry tomato, gherkins, capers, rocket, mint, onion, parsley, lime and olive oil dressing, saffron aioli) – $23.5

The calamari salad is THE perfect refreshing and healthy way to begin the day, or a light lunch option. I thoroughly enjoyed the smoothness of the little pearls of couscous, with the crunchiness of the green veggies, and of course, delicious slices of fried crumbed calamari.

Atlantic Salmon (Grilled atlantic salmon, smashed dill potato, seasonal greens, salsa verde) – $24.5

Salmon is probably the brunch dish I order the most in Melbourne cafes – how can you ever say no to a healthy, fatty dose of Omega 3 and the tender, juicy slices of this pink fish? The portion size of the salmon was huge and definitely the biggest I’ve had in Melbourne. With a crispy skin, lightly pink flesh inside, all topped off with a fresh drizzle of salsa verde – delicious!

The bad fat: We were excited to see how the turmeric in the crab omelette would turn out but the subtlety of this spice was lost amongst the chilli. The dill potato from the atlantic salmon was a little dry and could’ve done well with a little more butter, and the broccolini was also a bit too crispy and chewy.

FAT-O-METER: 4.5/5
