Top 5 Melbourne’s Best Brunches 2018

Almost 100 Melbourne cafes later, it takes quite a lot of ingenuity to surprise me and leave me with a lasting impression – so the standard smashed avo doesn’t cut it! The Melbourne brunch scene is one of the most competitive in the world, but it is still quite rare to find a cafe that was able to pull off both sweet and savoury dishes, and serve up a beautiful overall ambiance plus customer service.

It was REALLY difficult to pick my favourite 5 Melbourne cafes, but here is my coveted top 5 best cafes for breakfast in random order, linked to the detailed blogpost and the must-order dish from each (and a few honourable mentions because I couldn’t decide):

1. STOVETOP, CARLTON – BEST ASIAN FUSION CAFE IN MELBOURNE

  • Crispy skin salmon fillet with soba noodle
  • Crispy pork belly (Basmati rice, red curry, snake beans)

2. DOCASA, IVANHOE – MOST UNIQUE MELBOURNE CAFE featuring Italian-styled tapas

  • Duck Cigars (Porcini powder, orange reduction, citrus labna)
  • Ricotta Hotcakes (Lemon curd, freeze dried raspberries, meringue shards, pistachio crumble, vanilla mascarpone)

3. CLUBHOUSE MALVERN – BEST SALAD + BEST PANNA COTTA IN MELBOURNE

  • Spiced Chicken Grain Salad (Buckwheat, farro, broccoli/cauliflower rice, pomegranate, feta, halloumi and roast capsicum hummus)
  • Black Forest Panna Cotta (Chocolate panna cotta, vanilla coral sponge, raspberry jelly, lace cookie, pomegranate molasses and raspberry curd)

4. SHANKLIN CAFE, HAWTHORN EAST – BEST MUSHROOMS + BEST PANCAKES IN MELBOURNE

  • Nutella Stuffed Pancakes (Strawberries, Grilled Banana and Oreo Crumble)
  • Portobello Mushroom (Panko crumbed with Zaatar spice, Romesco Sauce, Roasted Capsicum, Spinach, Halloumi topped with 2 poached eggs and chilli oil)

5. SIR CHARLES, FITZROY – BEST BEEF SHORT RIBS IN MELBOURNE

  • Beef Short Ribs (48 hour braised beef short rib, carrot and miso puree, Japanese sweet potato, ginger and plum jus and a salad of pickled daikon and shiso with plum wine vinaigrette)

Collective Espresso Camberwell: Charred corn mac and cheese with soft shell crab

Grand Lafayette Prahran: Matcha french toast
