LENNOX COFFEE AND KITCHEN, HAWTHORN: Lennox Coffee and Kitchen, is a cute, small café that seems to cater more for the weekday worker, especially seeing that it’s right next to Epworth. The interior is small and cosy, but there is also a lovely outdoor sitting area perfect for summer. Given that Melbourne has such a competitive brunch scene, Lennox falls slightly short of those expectations, but nevertheless, it makes for a convenient location for a morning coffee or quick food stop.
The good fat: The most interesting on the menu was their carrot cake bircher muesli, which was definitely an innovative sweet brunch option. Unsure what to expect, I was very surprised and pleased with how carrot-cake-y the bircher managed to taste like! It seemed as if they had infused cinnamon and carrot – the classic flavours of a carrot cake, within a hearty bowl of oatmeal.
The highlight of the buckwheat bowl, was honestly the smoked salmon and halloumi, rather than the salad itself – the smoked salmon is a must-get addition if you’re not vegetarian!
The bad fat: Any Melbourne cafe has a lot to live up to, and whilst Lennox Coffee and Kitchen is a small spot, it didn’t leave a lasting impression. The buckwheat bowl was incredibly one-sided as the beetroot hummus/puree didn’t have much flavour to compensate for the veggies. The buckwheat was a bit scarce and wasn’t really able to provide an interesting twist or texture. Overall, the combination didn’t do much for me.
SHOULD YOU GET FAT HERE?
No – Maybe for a quick coffee stop or if they up their brunch game in future, but given the competitiveness of Melbourne cafes, I wouldn’t be heading back too soon.
