Tinker Northcote

TINKER, NORTHCOTE: I’ve been on a bit of a Tinker, Penta, MOB, Clubhouse spree lately, visiting the set of cafes that really seem to define the Melbourne brunch scene. Tinker, one of the OG cafes to really set the name in stone of this crew, has always been a place I’ve wanted to tick off my list. Unfortunately, not sure if whether it was because we went on a public holiday, the service was quite lacking, despite the food still being a delight to try.

Orange Blossom Hotcakes – $18.0

The good fat: Deciding to try something different, I opted for the spiced cauliflower with a few slices of smoked salmon on the side. The beetroot hummus, heirloom carrots, spiced cauliflower was all round a classic blend of Middle Eastern flavours – perfect for a small winter breakfast.

The highlight would be our orange blossom hotcakes. The batter itself was moist, bouncy and fluffy – with crisp pieces of meringue dotted around the outside. Not to mention, the cream cheese on top gave it a cheesy, slightly sour and stronger hint of sweetness.

Spiced Cauliflower on Sourdough – $18.5

The bad fat: Having heard so much about Tinker, it was quite disappointing to have remember this as one of the poorest customer service experiences we’ve had for a while – considering that most brunch places are quite diligent these days given the competitive Melbourne brunch scene. We understand that it’s busy, but regardless, the usual water when you first sit down didn’t happen about 5 minutes later, and no one had asked for our coffees until our dishes were ordered. Another main problem was the sourdough – for both our dishes, the sourdough underneath was almost impossible to cut through, we expected that it had been toasted, but it wasn’t crispy, but rather really chewy and unappetising.

SHOULD YOU GET FAT HERE?

Maybe we went on a bad day, so I think if you’re in the Northcote area, still check out this classic Melbourne café, but our experiences with their sister cafes were much, much better! (Penta ElsternwickClubhouse Malvern) Given the high quality of Melbourne brunch these days, Tinker failed to hit the mark for us.
