Berry and Chia Porridge (Brown Rice Flakes, Chia, Poached Pear, Puffed Rice, Berry Coulis and Hazelnut Praline) – $15.5

NO. 19 SOCIETY, ASCOT VALE: No. 19 Society is a beautiful brunch spot along the busy Union Road hub of Ascot Vale. Having rarely ventured this far north for brunch, we were certainly enthusiastic to see what the Northern side of Melbourne had to offer. No. 19 Society pleasantly surprised us with its fresh, chic decor with its white-panelled walls, and light timber aesthetic in a brightly lit location. The dishes all had their unique twists and were all-round delicious Melbourne breakfasts!

Green Eggs (Persian Feta, Sauteed Broccoli, Kale, Green beans) – $18.0

The good fat: Green eggs were so fresh, and wholesome – not usually an option that we opt for but this new experience made us feel like plunging into a forest of health! It was full of flavour, nuttiness from the pesto, rich velvety feta and sweetness from pumpkin puree on the side. The butter-crisped sourdough underneath was the perfect bed for our greens.

The rice porridge was much sweeter than expected – in a good, natural way that felt very cleansing and wholesome to eat – a great contrast compared to the usual hotcakes or waffles that we order.

Winter Mushrooms (Seasonal mushrooms, pickled enoki, bacon, chestnut creme, shaved parmesan, hazelnut snow) – $19.5

The mushrooms were so delicious – with an infused flavour that felt like eating truffles without the truffles. Mushrooms were fragrant, and with the saltiness from the parmesan flakes, it was a power couple. The hummus was also a hearty, grounded spice to make the perfect winter warmer. Specks of saltiness from the thick slice of bacon was just divine.

The bad fat: Would’ve loved for the hazelnut praline on the berry chia porridge to be more predominant as it would’ve given that extra complex crunch in texture. The rice porridge also lacked the chia we were hoping for – other than a few mere sprinkles on top, there wasn’t much substance within and the poached pear was a bit harder and not as melt-in-the-mouth as I had expected.

YES – No. 19 Society is definitely one of the top Melbourne brunch cafes and it’s a necessary addition to anyone’s list!
