Curry Smuggler Cafe

CURRY SMUGGLER CAFE, FITZROY: Curry Smuggler is now at the top of my list of top Indian restaurants in Melbourne! Nestled along a busy area in the heart of Fitzroy, Curry Smuggler is a casual dining spot with authentic Indian vibes, and a classic Indian menu featuring all the standards of warm flaky naan bready, flavoursome butter chicken, an all-round flavours that made it perfect for a Melbourne dinner during the cold winter.

Mango Lassi + Original Lassi ($6.0)

The good fat: Having tried lassi before as it’s really the perfect spice quencher, I was delighted to be reminded of how refreshing and smooth the traditional yoghurt drink was – so highly recommended to order either the mango or original lassi! The entrees of samosas and salmon tikka were a great start – the salmon was flavoursome with crispy skin, and the crumbliness of the samosa pastry was delightful.

Butter Chicken – $18.0

My usual problem with Indian food is that curry flavours seem very intermingled and similar after a while, so we opted for the Tawa Chicken, that featured a smoke flavoured traditional curry served with smoked onions and capsicum on hot plate, which contrasted with a very classic, Butter Chicken with tandoori chicken spices. Luckily this wasn’t a problem at all this time! The butter chicken was creamy and hearty, with the tandoori chicken cooked so tenderly. On the other hand, the Tawa chicken had a slight smokiness to it, reflecting its cooking and had more of a subtler curry flavour but strong hints of spiciness and chilli.

Tawa Chicken – $19.0

The bad fat: Whilst the texture of both our naan breads were super flaky and warm, the garlic naan didn’t really have hints of the garlic flavouring that I usually love. On the other hand, the Kashmiri naan featuring almond, cashews and sultanas was really sweet that it pretty much became more of a dessert naan which we were quite unaccustomed to. I also found the tawa chicken incredibly oily, so a little less generous on the oil would be great for future (for those watching our LDL cholesterol)

YES – For anyone who needs to satisfy their Indian food cravings, head to Curry Smuggler for a great Melbourne dinner restaurant with a casual and cosy atmosphere!
