SPEAKEASY KITCHEN BAR, SOUTH YARRA: A brunch place that now features an evening dinner and drinks menu, Speakeasy Kitchen Bar is nestled amongst a few other bars along Chapel Street – the brunch-dinner idea seems to be a trend starting to settle in. They have a nice spacious interior that was a bit chilly (heater could have been stronger), with a heated courtyard outside that has its own bar area, making it a cute late night drinks place. Unfortunately, the dinner dishes were a bit lacklustre despite having beautiful presentation worthy of the Melbourne culinary scene.
The good fat: The highlight of the steak was surprisingly, the spud hash, which was crispy golden outside and very tasty, peppered with herbs within! The zucchini fritto as part of our entree was an interesting idea, as the slices of zucchini were very soft and juicy, but had that lovely crisp outside from the fritter base.
The dessert was our favourite part of the night despite being quite simple. A warm, rich brownie, with smooth, velvety icecream on top of a crunchy cookie base, their house-made cookie sandwich was a nice way to end off the night (leaving me pretty guilty nevertheless at my sugar intake)
The bad fat: We had asked the steak to be medium rare and although one half of the steak was perfectly juicy, the other half was completely rare – which was quite a shame as otherwise it would’ve been quite a pleasant meal. The barramundi fillet was also on the dry side and I found the parsnips and carrot too hard/raw, not having been cooked to a softened, sweet texture to complement the rest of the veggies.
SHOULD YOU GET FAT HERE?
The idea of the heated external courtyard is cool but their dinner falls short in comparison to other areas along Chapel St.
