Acai smoothie – $12.0

SHANKLIN CAFE, HAWTHORN: Having heard so much about Shanklin, we were super excited to venture here one early morning before the brunch crowds hit. Nestled in the neat Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, the cafe has only been open 15 months is already such a hit with locals. Their special feature is the Eggs and Shanklish, which puts their own unique twist on a classic scrambled egg Melbourne brunch, whilst the Nutella-filled waffles, another ingenious invention is also a must-try.

Pork Belly w. Cous cous, apple, pork reduction and pomegranate – $20.0

The good fat: The pork belly was a huge hit, with a flavoursome pork reduction that resembled a slightly sweetened BBQ sauce, it was served with generous pieces of tender and fatty pieces of pork – my absolute favourite! The cous cous salad soaked up the reduction, so that it was moist and saucy, with sweet crunches of pomegranate seeds complementing the overall texture.

Nutella stuffed pancakes w. strawberries, grilled banana & oreo crumbles served with vanilla ice cream – $20.0

The nutella stuffed pancakes are an absolute stunner of a sweet breakfast item to the Melbourne brunch scene. With a guilt-ifying presentation, the warmth of the thick, fluffy pancakes oozing with nutella inside are simply too hard for anyone with a sweet tooth to resist. The dollops of icecream on top add a refreshing break from any potential dryness whilst the chocolate sauce spread across the bottom was rich without being too sweet. Despite how intense it looked, I was surprised that it wasn’t overly sugary!

Eggs and Shanklish (Scrambled with fresh herbs, cherry tomatoes, spring onion, wilted spinach & mint) – $22.0

The bad fat: I was expecting a bit more from Eggs and Shanklish – the flavours of the eggs were a little bland for my liking and an addition of a special sauce etc. would have really enhanced the textures even more!

FAT-O-METER: 4.5/5
