NEON TIGER, MALVERN: A sunny and bright Melbourne cafe along the busy Malvern Road, Neon Tiger is a chic suburban spot with a classic range of Modern Australian brunch dishes – aesthetically plated and perfectly placed to bask in the warm sun during Melbourne winter. The smoothies were rich but fresh, and the flavours of our shakshouka and the special eggplant special were hearty and warm.
The good fat: The shakshouka was a powerful start, with strong hints of chilli through the tomato sauce, that was really warming to eat on a cold day. The chorizo added necessary protein and a bit of complexity to an otherwise spice-dominated dish.
We tried an eggplant parmagiana that was advertised as the special of the day – definitely did not expect it to come out looking like a lasagne! I enjoyed the subtler flavours of the layers of sauce, which blended nicely with how smooth and soft the layers of lasagne pastry were. The eggplant was very soft and juicy!
The bad fat: The crumbed chicken on the side of the lasagne was really dry and bland – with no other sauces to accompany it. The most disappointing dish was the panna cotta, although the plating was beautiful and vibrant, the flavour of the panna cotta itself was really lacking and as was the acai gel. Crunchy, nutty crumbles of the granola were a nice touch but did not compensate for the overall dish.
