SHORT STRAW, HAWTHORN: Part of the trio of brunch spots that includes Collective Espresso and Turning Point, Short Straw is another classic Melbourne cafe with its own unique twists on standard items – located on the busy hub of Glenferrie Street. A look at their waffles is guaranteed to make anyone drool!

Eggs Benny (Crispy potato & braised pork hash w/ wilted spinach and hollandaise – $19.5 (+ $4.0 Avocado and Mushroom)

Vegan Euphoria (Cauliflower, quinoa, buckwheat, asparagus, kale, cashews, chilli, raisins) – $17.5
The good fat: The coconut bomb was the standout for me as I had accidentally ordered the same Eggs Benny as the one we had in Turning Point so the novelty of the pork with potato has was lost (oops!). Regardless, we enjoyed the fresh and varied selection of ingredients in the coconut bomb. The yoghurt had a subtle hint of coconut, and was delicate and smooth in texture. Complemented by a dash of sourness from the passionfruit, a crunch of the roasted cashews and granola, whilst decorated with a thinly sliced, dried pineapple – this was the perfect healthy and filling start to our day! Being vegan, my friend was also impressed with the Vegan Euphoria – an exciting, veggie-filled plate with interesting textures from the crispy kale and cauliflower.

Coconut Bomb w. Coconut goodness, savoury granola, crispy pineapple, strawberry & passion fruit – $17.5 (+$3.0 Banana, Cocoa nibs, Goji berries)
The bad fat: Would’ve loved the coconut bomb to incorporate some type of honey/sauce just to give it a yummy sugary kick without overpowering the other elements of the dish, especially considering that the coconut itself was quite subdued, and the predominating flavour came from the bursts of juiciness of the strawberries or the crunch of the nuts.
SHOULD YOU GET FAT HERE?
Yes – I’m so keen to go back and try the macaron waffles!
