DUMPLINGS PLUS: Located on the busy stretch of Swanston street near Melbourne Central, Dumplings Plus offers a quick Asian snack fix (or meals). We stumbled across it after a craving for Xiao Long Bao built up from a late night Shop the City event at Emporium, and without hesitation that was the dish we ordered.
Xiao Long Bao Special Steamed Juicy Pork Dumplings – 6pcs for $9.90
The good fat: A nice thin and velvety skin just like they do in Shanghai with a decent mouthful of hot soup as you eat the dumpling. The size was also quite big compared to ones you see elsewhere.
The bad fat: The soup was very very tasteless and bland, even though it was incorporated within the meat. I presume the meat was marinaded with the best flavours as it definitely lacked something that the vinegar could not make up for. It lacked the real, authentic soupy-meaty tastiness that Xiao Long Bao should encompass. Also, quite expensive for only 6 pieces as most other places in Chinatown do 8 pieces for the same price. For example, New Shanghai in Emporium is a much better option in terms of quality, taste and price. (Shanghai Sensations)
SHOULD YOU GET FAT HERE?
NO – The other dishes don’t look that exciting, but the Xiao Long Bao are definitely NOT authentic and overpriced – which makes me suspect that the flavours of the other dishes probably aren’t either.
